Slowly But Surely - "Who's Surely" (the great Leslie Nielsen)

Well I took a week off for Thanksgiving and I don't think I did too badly.  Maintained my weight for that week within a pound or two and lost it back with another pound or two this week. It's a good thing that I am such a young guy though as this weight loss looks like it will take some time. Lost a pound and contrary to this infamous date in history at least I didn't bomb out too badly.

Moreover (do people use this word anymore?) I have been going out for lunches the last few days mainly to break the monotony of the foods that I am eating and although I am not sure if it is helping or hurting I am going to try to keep it up for at least another week to see where it goes. After that we try the gym. Upward and onward - or maybe I should say downward and onward. We'll see.

The First Week

I know the first week is always the easiest week to lose weight so I am not going to get carried away with the fact that I lost 6.2 pounds, but the fact is that I had no problem with the diet, did not approach using the appoints allotted to me and was able to use the extra 49 points all on the weekend. I also had a lot of fun working the mobile tracker (yep that's what I consider fun) and I also bought a scale for this coming week. It seems that by not using all of my daily points I am violating the rules. Trying to understand why eating less is bad for your diet, I have to assume that not eating enough will eventually cause your body to crave more and thus cause you to go off the diet. As a result, I promises to eat more next week to help my diet along. What a crazy world. I did pick up one point at the meetings which was that protein foods are power foods because they fill you up more thus causing you not to eat more. Interesting, I am going to keep an eye (and mouth) on that theory and see what happens next week.

Mobile Dieting

Well I started my diet today and the actual food part was quite easy. The harder and more interesting part was using Weight Watchers mobile app to help me along. While I admit there quite a number of things on the app that I don't yet understand the food scanning portion was awesome.  I also didn't realize how much food portions play into the points structure. More to the point I never realized how small a cup of food was. At times it seemed like it took more time to enter the food in the app than to eat the food. So that's my next two goals, speed up the food entry and slow down the eating. Yep this mobile dieting is a whole new world. I just hope it's a thinner one as well.

Moving Towards A Goal

Well I joined Weight-watchers and actually went to the meeting and afterward participated in a power point power start up meeting. I remember from Nutrisystems more than 15 years ago, the tips that you receive at these meetings seem silly and maybe they are, but just by participating they seem to get you to buy into the program.  At this meeting the helpful tip was to concentrate on not what you are moving away from ie. losing weight but  moving toward a specific goal  and for me that is to be thinner when Meryl and I get married, hopefully sometime this summer. Whether that will help me or not, I don't know but it won't make things more difficult. Also with a starting weight of 252 at WW and 249.6 on the home scale, it looks like I will need all the little help that I can get. Of course if I needed more inspiration I just have to look at the two pictures I took this morning before leaving for WW.

The Senior Citizen Diet

As I look around here I see lot's of senior citizens. The good news is that most of the ones that I see look a lot older than me and a good portion look quite healthy. The bad news is that most of them look much thinner than me which of course tells me that its time not only for a Way of Life diet but a Way to Live diet if I want to live a long and healthy life in retirement. I never realized how much I would enjoy retirement so now my mission is to make that retirement last as long as is humanely possible and to do that I have to deal with my one remaining real demon in my life, which of course is excessive food. Tomorrow I take the first step in conquering that demon and that's by going to Weight-watchers. I don't know if that's the best diet in the world as so many of my friends have told me about so many diets but it's the oldest one I know of and since growing old is the main objective here I might as well stick with a diet which will also remind me of the lasting mission that I must remain on.
